Their Exciting Mission to Preserve the Wonders of the Oceans

The vast expanses of saltwater that cover our planet are a vital source for all forms of terrestrial life. Yet, their fragile balance is threatened by the impacts of climate change and human activity. It is in this crucial context that Geneva Ocean Academy (GOA) has emerged, a non-profit organization dedicated to raising public awareness about the hidden riches of the oceans and the urgent need to protect them.

Awakening Awareness Through Education

Our journey with GOA began in early 2023 when we had the opportunity to attend their captivating training sessions on marine ecology. These sessions were a true revelation, awakening in us an insatiable curiosity and deep respect for these vast bodies of water that play a crucial role in the balance of our planet. Inspired by this transformative experience, we decided to invest further by taking a marine research assistant training course in the Philippines.

A Dedicated Team Sharing Knowledge

Throughout our journey, the passionate team at GOA has been a valuable guide, generously sharing their knowledge and love for the oceans. Their enriching exchanges allowed us to deepen our understanding of the environmental issues related to the oceans and to discover the hidden treasures they hold. We want to express our deep gratitude to GOA and its dedicated team for the invaluable knowledge they impart.

A Non-Profit Organization Serving Ocean Preservation

But what exactly is Geneva Ocean Academy (GOA)? In short, it is a non-profit organization whose main mission is to offer courses and training aimed at raising public awareness about the crucial importance of preserving the oceans. Their educational programs provide all the necessary tools for participants to understand the marine ecosystem and thus better protect it. GOA also intervenes in schools to help young people understand the environmental challenges facing the oceans while exploring the unique riches they offer to our planet.

Unique Opportunities for Underwater Exploration

Beyond their theoretical courses, GOA also offers immersive practical experiences. They provide the opportunity to train in scuba diving in Lake Geneva, under the supervision of certified SSI (Scuba Schools International) instructors. Additionally, they regularly organize boat diving expeditions, accompanied by marine biologists, speakers, and an expert in ocean governance, allowing participants to closely discover the fascinating underwater life in various seas and oceans.

Become a Member and Support Their Noble Cause

For those who wish to get more involved in ocean preservation, GOA offers the opportunity to become a member of their association. By joining their ranks, you will directly contribute to supporting their awareness and conservation efforts while enjoying exclusive benefits such as discounts on their programs and volunteer opportunities.

The Vital Importance of Oceans for Life on Earth

But why are the oceans so crucial for our planet? The answer lies in the multiple essential roles they play in maintaining the global ecological balance. First, the oceans are responsible for producing more than 50% of the oxygen we breathe, thanks to the photosynthesis process carried out by marine phytoplankton. Without this vital source of oxygen, life as we know it would not be possible.

Beyond their contribution to our oxygen supply, the oceans are also an invaluable source of food and livelihoods for millions of people around the world. They feed nearly 3 billion individuals and host exceptional biodiversity, with more than 700,000 known marine species to date. This biological richness is essential for maintaining the fragile balance of marine ecosystems, on which we all depend.

But the importance of the oceans does not stop there. They play a crucial role in regulating our planet’s climate. Indeed, the oceans absorb about 25% of the carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions produced by human activities, thus helping to reduce the amount of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere. Moreover, they act as the Earth’s largest heat sink, absorbing 90% of the excess heat due to climate change. Ocean currents transport this heat and moisture around the globe, helping to regulate the planet’s temperature.

Threats to the Oceans

Unfortunately, the oceans face unprecedented threats due to their exploitation and climate change. Industrial fishing, various types of pollution, rising temperatures, sea level rise, and ocean acidification endanger their health and that of the marine species that live there. Geneva Ocean Academy particularly emphasizes the direct impact that a landlocked country like Switzerland can have on our oceans. It is also crucial to take immediate measures to preserve the health and productivity of the oceans to maintain their essential role in climate regulation.

An Urgent Call to Action: Join the Ocean Preservation Movement with Geneva Ocean Academy
